Classroom Attendance and Work Expectations

Class attendance and completed work are critical factors for success in the 7th grade.  Homework is a normal part of the learning process and in order for students to master concepts and skills they are being taught, it is necessary to work on them at home.  It is important for students to keep an organized binder and make the most of his/her time by creating a regular schedule each day after school to work on homework. A special place to work in the home should also be considered.  Good time management and organizational skills are key to a successful year.

Homework will be given most evenings and weekends. Each assignment is written on the Homework Board in class and each student is responsible for writing the assignment in their daily planner. Planners are required! Students are expected to use their planners to keep track of their daily, weekly and long-term assignments. Please note that late work is not accepted. Students will be given one day for every day absent to get their work turned in. If a test is missed, I will give the student a reminder to schedule a time to take the test. If the student fails to schedule a time with me to make up the test, or missed assignments due to absence, they will be given a zero grade for that test/assignment.

Behavior Expectations

Appropriate classroom behavior is mandatory. In order to provide a positive, safe and effective learning environment to all my students, I have devised a set of rules that should be adhered to by all of my students. The following is an outline of my basic classroom rules that are based on respect.

Respect for Self

·        Always do your best

·        Positively participate in all classroom activities

Respect for Others

·        Stay on task without disturbing or distracting others

·        Do not use ‘put downs’ or harass others

·        Respect other people’s differences and opinions

Respect for School

·        Raise your hand and wait your turn to speak

·        Enter and exit the room quietly

·        Complete all assignments on time

·        Actively listen when the teacher and other students are speaking

Consequences

If you make the decision to step outside the boundaries of what you know to be unacceptable, the steps I will take to redirect your behavior in a positive way are as follows:

1.                  Warning

2.                  Student stays in two minutes after class

3.                  101 slip and parent contact

4.                  Referral to office

Behavior is a choice and although consequences are necessary at times, I believe rewards are just as important. Any time a student is seen doing a positive action in class, he/she will be recognized.  Life Skills awards are also given and students are encouraged to work towards earning them. Administration and staff members value this award system and would like to see all students receive at least one Life Skill award during the year.
