Language Arts

Monday
bulletStudents learned the difference between a legend and a fable and discussed the meaning of theme. Next, we read the fable, Two Ways to Count to Ten.
bulletStudents added the following terms to their notebook: legend, fable, theme and universal theme.
Tuesday
bulletStudents worked on alternatives for dead word list and described the winter season in a free write activity.
Wednesday
bulletStudents read the fable, The Race Between Toad & Donkey, and focused on finding the theme.
Thursday
bulletThe class discussed the universal theme of the two fables read this week, as well as other common themes found in fables.

Social Studies

Monday
bulletStudents wrote out vocabulary terms and definitions for Chapter 7. Students brainstormed and discussed what they know about Islam and started reading Chapter 7 - The Geography of the Arabian Peninsula.
Tuesday
bulletThe class watched a film on Cairo, Egypt and shared their Medieval Manuscripts.
Wednesday
bulletStudents worked on a Geography Challenge on the Arabian Peninsula during Medieval Times.
Thursday
bulletStudents took the Arabian Peninsula map test and read about the desert and oasis environments. Students also discussed the various adaptations people made in order to survive in these types of environments.

Thursday
bulletToday, students read the play, Monsters are Due on Maple Street, and created a T-Chart, recording the plays main events on one side and the characters reaction to each event on the other.

bulletIn grammar, the class worked on identifying adverbs and diagramming sentences.
Wednesday
bulletStudents read about speech preparation and wrote a practice speech about their favorite hobby or sport. The speech will be presented in small groups.

bulletThe class corrected the adverb grammar assignment and practiced delivering personal subject speeches in a small group setting.

bulletIn literature, students took a quiz on the story, Exploring the Titanic, and was assigned an extended response question.
bulletIn grammar, the class reviewed subjects, verbs, nouns, adjectives and sentence diagramming for tomorrow's test.
Thursday
bulletStudents took the grammar test and reviewed the writing terms and format for tomorrow's writing terms test.

bulletIn writing, students were tested on the writing terms and formats for paragraph writing.

bulletToday, students read sections 2.6 and 2.7. They also reviewed sections 2.2 - 2.5 and completed a Reading Notes worksheet.
Wednesday
bulletThe class reviewed the comprehension format for paragraph writing and discussed the story, Rikki-tikki-tavi.
Thursday
bulletStudents learned about an author's use of suspense and foreshadowing and applied their understanding to the story Rikki-tikki-tavi. Students wrote down clues and hints of foreshadowing from the story. The class also wrote a comprehension paragraph based on a question from the story.
Friday
bulletThe class was tested on the story, Rikki-tikki-tavi, by Rudyard Kipling and Lesson 3 and 4 Vocabulary. Students turned in their final comprehension response paragraphs.

bulletStudents finished watching a film on Castles in the Middle Ages.
bulletThe class worked on 2.5 of the Chapter 2 outline and went over the answers for the Chapter 1 test.
Tuesday
bulletStudents were introduced to the Writing Terms and Paragraph Formats we will use throughout the year. Students will practice their new learning by responding to Comprehension questions #1 and 2 in the the story, Rikki-tikki-tavi.
bulletIn grammar, the class reviewed the definition of an adjective, subject and verb, and applied their understanding to the grammar worksheet assignment.

bulletStudents were assigned roles from feudal times and wrote a letter about their life to a future generation family member.
Thursday
bulletThe class graded the Europe map exercise and worked on the Ch. 2 outline and medieval times letter.

bulletThe class was introduced to the Cardinal Rules of Writing. Students took notes in their Reading Notebook and will be tested on the rules this Thursday.

Tuesday
bulletToday, students reviewed the basic sentence and identified nouns in a sentence. Students also applied the Cardinal Rules in a writing exercise on the story, Seventh Grade.
bulletThe class was tested on the 23 Helping Verbs.
bulletStudents reviewed the definitions for the vocabulary words this week.
Wednesday
bulletStudents logged onto the Classzone website and registered to access the on-line literature book. Students read the story, Thank you M'am, by Langston Hughes on-line and were given a literary analysis worksheet to complete.

bulletStudents took the Cardinal Rules test and corrected the grammar homework.

bulletToday, students reviewed verbs and helping verbs, and located them in sentences.
bulletThe class learned about the five stages of plot and began reading the short story, Seventh Grade, by Gary Soto.
bulletThe class reviewed the vocabulary definitions for the week.
Wednesday
bulletStudents applied their knowledge on the stages of plot with the story, Seventh Grade, and made connections from the story to their own life.
bulletStudents were introduced to the Realistic Fiction book report.
Thursday
bulletThe class visited the school library and was given the opportunity to check out a realistic fiction novel. Students also took notes on realistic fiction.
bulletStudents corrected and turned in their grammar assignment on verbs.
Friday
bulletStudents were tested on the roots man and manu, and reviewed the story, Seventh Grade.

Wednesday

bulletThe class was given a reading notebook and discussed how the notebook would be used in language arts. We also went over the rubric for the notebook and my expectations for note taking.
bulletStudents were given three page protectors, one page protector for each subject.

bulletStudents were introduced to the five reading strategies and took notes on the strategies in their reading notebooks. The class turned in their vocabulary packets.
bulletHumanities students were tested on vocabulary terms. Humanities Plus will be tested on terms next Friday.
