Designing And Planning An Experiment
State the Problem
Needs to be written as an investigative (operational) question.
Include manipulated variable and responding variable in
question. Then research the related science fields.
Hypothesize or Predict
Explain what you think may happen or suggest an answer why it
will happen. Write hypothesis in the form of an If…then…..because ……statement.
Be sure to give the reason for the prediction.
Plan Your Experiment
List materials needed:
Write a step-by-step procedure that another person can easily follow. Be
sure to include labeled diagrams of the set-up.
Describe your experimental control group, your standard for
comparison.
What is changed and measured in your experimental group? (manipulated
variable and responding variable). Which variables must be controlled
or held constant through out the experiment?
Gather Data
Describe observations using your senses(qualitative).
Describe plans to measure and/or estimate. (quantitative).
Record And Organize Data
Please include all charts, tables, graphs, and diagrams.
How will you record data during experiment?
How will you organize your data after the experiment? (which
type of graph?)
Analyze Data
What will you look for in your data to prove the hypothesis? (trends,
responses, patterns, etc.)
How will you know if you need more information?
Conclude
This is a complete and total summary/review of your experiment.
What will happen if the hypothesis is proved true?
What is your alternative hypothesis, if your original hypothesis was
incorrect? What future experiments might you perform
