Your mission is to design the LIGHTEST Bridge that can hold the MOST Weight.

Open Model Smart
    Go to File
            >New
                >30” x 20”

 Go to Members
    >Default Material Type
        >Balsa Wood
            >1/4” Balsa-BAL8D1

Go to Supports
    >Add Fixed
Place it 6 over & 4 up; center it on the crosshairs.

Go to Supports
    >Add Horizontal Roller
Place it 24 over & 4 up; center it on the crosshairs.

Go to Members
    >Add
Place the bottom member between the supports.

Build a bridge of your design no taller than 5”.

Do not go above the 9” mark.

When you finish:

Go to Loads
    >Vertical Down
Place the arrow on the top middle of your bridge.

Go to Analyze
    >Analyze

Wait for the computer to test the bridge.

A stronger bridge will take longer to break, so hope for a long analysis.

Write down the data – structure weight & breaking load on the Model Smart data sheet. The data erases after you print, so be sure to write down the data first!

Now you are ready to print. Place the data sheet into the printer upside-down with the heading facing to the right.

Calculate the ratio and submit for credit.

Grams to Pounds =  # of grams ÷ 28.35 ÷ 16 = lbs

Ratio = weight of bridge in lbs ÷ Stress in lbs

(note: write down the data before you print.)
