Learn the locations and uses of safety equipment, eyewash station, and
fire extinguishing devices.
Wear eye protection devices when observing or performing certain
functions in connection with laboratory activities.
Flood with water immediately and continuously for at least 15 minutes if
any chemical is spilled or splashed on your skin or in your eyes and notify
your instructor.
Notify your instructor of any accident or potentially hazardous
situation, no matter how minor.
Keep the workspace and apparatus at your station clean and in good order.
Never mix or heat chemicals unless directed to do so.
Know what you are doing. Be wary of what neighboring students are doing.
Throw all solids and paper to be discarded into appropriate waste
containers. Never discard matches, filter paper, paper towels, or other
solids in the sink.
Read an assigned investigation carefully BEFORE beginning. Note and
comply with every caution listed in the experiment. Follow closely, but not
blindly, all oral and written directions.
Read the label carefully before taking anything from a bottle or
container. Using the wrong material could result in an injury.
Do not carry side shelf bottles to you desk or work area.
Do not concentrated heat in just on e spot on the test tube, and never
point the open end of the test tube at anyone. Never look down a test tube.
Never pour water into concentrated acid when mixing acids and water.
Always pour a concentrated acid into water slowly and stir constantly.
Don’t smell a liquid directly when observing the odor. Use your hand to
fan the odor toward you.
Regard all chemicals as hazardous unless your instructor informs you
otherwise. Never taste a chemical or solution or touch chemicals with your
hands unless directed to do so by your instructor. Wash your hands before
leaving.
Allow sufficient time for materials to cool, as many materials are not
observable hot.
Work deliberately and with definite purpose, but do not rush through an
experiment.
Do not remove any chemicals or materials from the science labs – there
will be no tolerance for violation of this rule.
Removal of chemicals or materials or deliberate misuse of chemicals will
result in removal from the classroom and perhaps more sever discipline.
Be sure that gas and water lines at your station are shut tightly and
that all equipment and supplies are in their proper places before leaving a
lab.
When inserting glass tubing or thermometers into stoppers, use a towel,
grasping the tubing close to the stopper which has been moistened with water
or a lubricant.
Ask your instructor for help if you do not understand how or why to do a
task.
Be aware that synthetic clothing and hair spray are highly flammable
materials.
Laboratory dress: a) tie back long hair, b) tuck ties into your shirt, c)
do not wear oversized clothing or open-toed shoes when performing labs, d)
wear safety goggles when dealing with any chemicals, heat or flame, and e)
use gloves when appropriate.
If your clothes or hair catch fire, NEVER run! Smother the fire
with a fire blanket by wrapping the blanket around the victim.
Absolutely no food or drink in the lab.
Do not perform any unauthorized experiments.
Never work in the laboratory alone.
Never leave a flame unattended.
Never heat flammable substances.
When transferring acids or bases, always use a funnel to avoid spills.
To avoid cuts, never use chipped or broken glassware. Never leave hot
glassware unattended.
Never put hot glassware directly into water or other liquid.
Notify the instructor immediately in the event of a spill or breakage of
lab equipment.
Dispose of chemicals, even if it is water, as directed by the instructor.
NEVER just pour an experiment down the drain.
Never carry lit alcohol burners.
Never carry chemicals from lab stations to tables.
Always carry equipment close to your body and upright.
If there is a fire in the class, use the fire extinguisher. Remember to
pull the ring lock pin, point the extinguisher at the base of the fire, and
press the discharge lever.
