These are the responsibilities of a middle school counselor:
- Responsive Services (Helping the students directly)
- Meet with students with presenting needs and concerns
- Crisis counseling
- Small group interventions and counseling
- Provide referral services for students, families and staff
- Coordinate with school and community personnel to bring together
resources for students
- Guidance (Doing lessons in the classrooms)
- Plan, implement and evaluate our developmental Guidance Program
- Educate staff, parents and community about Guidance Program
- Teach guidance units/topics
- Assist teachers with teaching guidance units/topics
- Consult with administrators and teachers regarding guidance
- Support teachers in teaching EALRS and
- Involve students in personalized education and career planning
- Individual Planning (Helping students with academic/career planning)
- Registering and scheduling students
- Guide individuals and groups through the development of educational
and career/vocational plans
- System Support (Consulting and collaborating with community, families
and staff)
- Consult and collaborate with parents and families
- Consult and collaborate with teachers and other staff
- Conduct training and in-service for staff and community members
- Collect, maintain, evaluate and disseminate data as needed
- Plan, implement, and evaluate developmental program of guidance
